< Back to listThe new iPhone: is it worth the fuss?
Fiona Thorne
"Is there still a waiting list, will I actually be able to buy one?”; “has the death grip problem really been solved?” and most importantly “should the new iPhone 4 be kept solely for the cool and the young?”.
These were the raft of questions were running through my head as I went to the Orange Shop at lunchtime yesterday having almost made up my mind to make the leap into the world of Apple for the first time.
The first question demonstrates the brilliance of the Apple strategy to maintain the wow factor of any newly launched product by restricting supply. And of course, when I was told that there were “just a few in stock” my mind was made up – I had to have one.
As to the software glitch, this has definitely taken a little shine off what was otherwise a text book launch. But again, Apple have proved one of the other reputational truths to be correct - if you have enough credit in the brand equity bank, you can get away with a few problems without the sky falling in. And so far I am happy to report that my shiny new phone is working just fine, irrespective of how I hold it.
My other question was really about whether all the apps and clever tricks of the iPhone were really going to be for me, or whether it was really all a little gimmicky and distracting from the main purpose of the phone. Again, I have an answer. I LOVE it! I’ve been downloading apps, sending emails and surfing as if there is no tomorrow. Apple has another convert, there’s no going back.
